My intentions are to start a production company based out of my house. For simplicity I feel forming a DBA instead of a corporation is my best bet. However my problem is that i’m currently renting, and it probably won’t be my residence for the duration of my business venture. Do I have any other options? Could I set up a business using a po box or something like that? Currently, I can’t afford to rent out a permanent location to do business out of (its my plan to do so in the future, however money is an issue at the moment.) Should I just form it using my current address and change it as I move? What happens if I sell a video, then move, and the address i’m living at currently is listed as the companies place of business, when its not? And in that case, if a viewer went to the address listed as the place of business and the new tenants answered… if something were to happen couldn’t I be held liable?

DBA – is just a formal announcement of the Name of your business, so that you can get a business license, and your business name bank account. The other part of the DBA, is that you are reserving that special and unique name as your own, and nobody in your state may use it, its’ yours for 5 years, after that you have to renew. Your form of business will be as a Sole Proprietor, as versus an LLC or other corporation. When you file for your DBA, your business address could be a paid post office box, if you will be moving to a more suitable environment as soon as you are able. Instead of using an address – you may opt to have a Web based business! Your email address or web site will be how people will contact you to do business, your address will only show on your business checks, and that’s because banks won’t let you use a P.O.box. Good Luck!
